As you can imagine my first 6 months in business has been a roller coaster, people say the first years the hardest and add into the mix that we are emerging out of a global pandemic and well some people would say I’m crazy. But as you all know I’m incredibly driven and I’ve always been determined to succeed. So, when I was reading the newest edition of Creative head magazine and saw they are running a year’s long business mentorship I had to jump on it, but first I hear you asking who are Creative Head?
Creative Head is the industry leading magazine for hair professionals, they cover everything from new trends, industry news, fashion shows and events, the works. They are the go-to for everything hair for professionals. This year they have started a new project a business mentorship called the Activor Mentorship for salon owners and freelancers alike. This mentorship pairs top industry names with new business owners or business owners who want to re-envigore their business. So, I decided to apply, I knew their would-be thousands of people applying but I thought it would be worth a shot anyway. Then on a fateful Monday while I was up to my eyeballs in accounts, I saw an email pop up on the corner of my laptop saying ‘Activor Mentorship- Successful Application’
After promptly bursting into tears, Jack concerningly popping his head into the front room to find out why I was sobbing doing my accounts and Oni more concerned with trying to lick my tears. I read the email from Creative Head informing me I’d been successful with my application, and I would be paired with the amazing Session Stylist Sharon Robinson. Sharon is a world-renowned stylist who is a regular face at London Fashion Week and has worked with some of the industries legendary artists like Sam McKnight.
I think in total I read the email about 6 times just to make sure I was reading it right and I wasn’t dreaming. I never expected that this early on in my freelance career I’d have an opportunity like this, to be chosen out of all the businesses that have applied feels like a dream come true. I’ve always been sure about my skills with hair but going into business was something I did with less certainty, so to be recognised for my business felt like an achievement above anything else I’d achieved before.
Now over the next 12 months I will have regular meetings with Sharon to discuss my career and help my business go from strength to strength. I will also be attending group workshops with all the other mentors and mentees organized by Creative Head to learn different aspects of business and leadership and I will be featured in the November issue of Creative Head. I’m so thankful for this programme and I can’t wait to gain all the skills I need to build a further my career and build a business I can be proud of.
